Angus Davies provides a ‘hands-on’ review of the Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 6 Heritage Automatic Replica Watch. This watch replica features retro-styling, but is very applicable to modern life with its simple to interpret dial and convenient self-winding movement. However, as parents we accept that our precious offspring have to enter a potentially harmful psychological phase in their lives. My son is taking his ‘GCSEs’ and my daughter is in the midst of ‘doing her A-levels’.
These are anxious times, as any concerned parent will attest. Children throughout the United Kingdom are in the middle of taking important examinations which, on the face of it, could shape their lives forever.
Ultimately, years of studying convene at this point in time. This is the moment your child has to distill all the knowledge they have acquired and demonstrate a degree of understanding within an examination room. One three hour exam, could influence the future career path of your child. Opportunities could be gained or lost, all within this small snapshot of time.
There is a big part of me which wishes to take the examinations on my children’s behalf, but clearly this is not possible. I want to protect them from upset. However, studying for examinations is like a metaphor for life where the parent has to allow the child to enter a scary world and find their own pathway to survival.
‘My babies’ are 16 and 18 years of age, a darling boy and a beautiful girl. I can’t help but reveal my love for them, sometimes to their embarrassment.
It is only through being exposed to risk and, in some regrettable circumstances, suffering the negative consequences of failure, that we become sufficiently able to cope with life’s challenges. Indeed, it is by overcoming the cruel fate of life’s meandering trajectory that we reveal a degree of competence and show prospective employers we are of the right calibre.
Based on an impressive body of work, where stylish timepieces proffer ease of interpretation and notable aesthetic prowess, TAG Heuer has shown it is of the right calibre when it comes to producing covetable timepieces.
TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 6 replica watch has little requirement to prove its credentials at creating chronometers, it has a rich history of producing highly accurate mechanical watches. Moreover, the name ‘CARERRA’, which can trace its origins to the 1950s motorsport event, the Carrera Pan Americana, is a nomenclature that has adorned the dials of some of the most legible watches ever produced.
It’s rude to stare
Earlier this year, TAG Heuer, ‘the Swiss Avant-Garde watchmaker since 1860’, released an interesting array of novelties including the drop-dead gorgeous CARRERA (39mm) Calibre 6. This timepiece, imbued with a vintage persona, sports a retro HEUER logo and brims with aesthetic prowess and horological eloquence.
This is a watch replica which captures the magic of the original 1963 classic timepiece with period details such as a perforated leather strap but, somehow, it delivers something fresh and new. When I held this timepiece in my paternal hands, I lovingly looked down upon its handsome lines and felt a warm sense of recognition.
Quite simply, this watch replica is drop-dead gorgeous. My mother would always remark, ‘It’s rude to stare’. However, with such extreme beauty evident, it is difficult not to break a few rules and prolong one’s gaze for perhaps a tad longer than what would be considered socially acceptable.
A winning formula
The winning formula consists of pure lines, limited indications which impart purely the essential of hours, minutes, small seconds and date. There is nothing extraneous which could mar the clean and seemingly simple appearance of this silver hued dial. However, look closely and the construction of the dial is far from simple, the applied polished, faceted hour markers collaborate with gleaming hands, lined with luminescent material, to enunciate time with perfect diction. There is an absence of ambiguity, everything is clear.
The silver coloured dial is paired with contrasting blue and red tinctures to bestow a flourish of ebullience but without marring the clarity of purpose.
Size – widespread appeal
However, when contrasted with models from the 1960s, when the first CARERRA models were introduced, it would be considered large.Size is always a potentially contentious issue. Alas, due to my atypical stature, I would have preferred a 41mm case diameter, but my own physique is very much at the extreme of the distribution curve and says more about my freakish physical build than any fault with the CARRERA Calibre 6. The comfort is excellent with no undue hindrance of wrist movement and no annoying red marks or chafing. The 39mm diameter case is, by today’s standards, relatively modest in size. It is difficult to please all the people, all of the time. I suspect for the majority of wearers, the scale will prove highly agreeable.
A well-judged period detail
The potential risk of incorporating period detail is that the modern version of the timepiece appears a little contrived and sometimes a hotchpotch of ideas which lack cohesion. However, no such allegations could be directed towards the TAG Heuer CARRERA Calibre 6 which confers handsome aesthetics which should deliver lasting eye-appeal.
The Calibre 6
TAG Heuer states the calibre has a beautifully decorated oscillating mass featuring Côtes de Genève motif. However, I was unable to ascertain the quality of the finishing due to the fitment of a solid caseback. Regrettably, this particular added value will only be seen by the watchmaker when the timepiece requires its periodic lubrication service, remaining beyond the view of the fortunate wearer.
At the heart of the CARRERA Calibre 6 is the eponymously named Calibre 6 self-winding movement. The frequency of the balance is 28,800 vph (4Hz) and the power-reserve is 44 hours. Most notably, this is a COSC-certified chronometer, denoting a high degree of accuracy.
Nevetheless, the absence of an exhibition caseback is partially offset with an attractive caseback featuring a period Heuer logo, reinforcing the retro character of the timepiece.
I can’t deny I adore this watch. It delivers a user-friendly dial layout which lucidly communicates with the wearer. The use of colour and depth is judged to perfection, delivering a sumptuous appearance, despite the very modest asking price of £2600.00 (RRP as at 11.6.2015).
The subtle references to a bygone period have been expertly judged and the Swiss mechanical movement within this CARRERA reinforce the perception of quality. Indeed, this is a watch replica which clearly exhibits it has many talents and is of the right calibre. I just hope, my children’s examination efforts deliver an equally impressive and successful conclusion.
